I like the Playlist DJs to be a hub for house music fans, dj’s and producers – a one stop place where you can find the best things out there about house music and the culture that sounds it. In this article there will be no surprises, but perhaps reminders of some of the best places you can digest your music content across the web.
We’re going to look at dancemusic stores, shops and magazines.
1 – Mixmag
If you don’t know Mixmag, what are you even doing here! The physical, real life magazine was here long before the days of the internet and it brands itself as the world’s biggest dance music and club destination.
On the mixmag site you’re going to get the latest in dance music news, reviews and tech amongst other things like tickets and the Lab LDN. Click the banner above for the full Mixmag experience.
2 – DJ Mag
Again, another staple of the dance music world, is DJ Mag. I remember this magazine being available in the local RS mcColls when I was young. It sometimes came with a free cover CD.
With an iconic red logo and a heritage that stretches back almost 30 years, DJ Mag, is one of electronic music’s best-loved brands.
What began in 1991, as a print magazine to reflect the emerging UK electronic music scene, is now a global multimedia brand with assets spanning print, web, video and events with a global monthly reach of 76 million.
DJ Mag is translated into ten languages every single month and has been awarded ‘Best Music Magazine’ at the International Dance Music Awards a record 17 times.
As owners of the influential Top 100 DJs and Top 100 Clubs polls DJ Mag is read and respected worldwide. Over 1.2 million people vote in Top 100 DJs, while 600,000 vote in Top 100 Clubs.
3 – Resident Adviser
Resident Adviser isn’t a site I’m overly familiar with even though I know it’s a huge player in dance music content.
Established in 2001, Resident Advisor (RA) is an online music magazine and community platform dedicated to showcasing electronic music, artists and events across the globe.
RA combines high-quality writing and films with listings, directories and industry tools to create an ecosystem of content and services. They play an indispensable role in supporting the electronic music industry worldwide. They have an audience of over four million monthly readers is made up of music fans, club-goers, DJs, producers, venue owners, promoters and record labels.
RA’s inspiring and dynamic work environment offers a multitude of career opportunities. They are a diverse, international team with shared values and, most importantly, a deep-rooted passion for electronic music. The global reach is anchored by local knowledge, combining high-quality editorial with extensive listings for clubs and festivals around the world.

4 – 5 Magazine
The next couple are borne out of google searches. It’s great to see other well establised pages come up. 5 mag appeals as it focusses on genre’s that are personal favourites of ours such as ambient house and soulful music! Their own defintion and explanation of themselves is:
5 Magazine is a House Music magazine based in Chicago and publishing since 2005. They write about Deep House, Soulful House, Techno, Disco, Funk and all flavors of underground dance music. This sh*t saved our lives. Beautiful. Check them out by clicking above.
5 – Decoded Magazine
Decoded Magazine is a more familiar name to us in the dance music content world. They’ve got a great write up on their site which is:
In a saturated and cloned dance music market, it is becoming all too common to merely emulate, rather than stand out, be unique and create memorable music. Their passion for timeless, creative and intimate music allows us to filter through to the artists we invite to join Decoded Magazine They do not look for just anyone, we are looking for people who create memorable music that inspires and invokes emotion, rather than be disposable chart topping hits and mixes.
They support and nurture underground house, progressive, techno, deep house, minimal, breaks, electronic, drum and bass music.
We live in a world of mass media consumerism, yet never tell a story. Never in the history of mankind, has so much information been available, yet our voices are never heard. Decoded Magazine aims to deliver thought provoking, intelligent journalistic articles that affect the generations who are passionate about electronic music, fashion, lifestyle, industry news, interviews, travel, food and breaking new emerging talent beyond the dance floor. We provide ethical, provoking and humourous content to a global audience.
We are a collective of professional recording artists, journalists, label owners, DJs, promoters and underground music lovers. It is a passion that runs deep, a feeling of taking back control of an industry we love and so heavily invest in with our own personal lives. We are not grandstanding, we are not thinking of changing the world overnight, but we do hope that we can slowly open new experiences to a new generation (and us older more established) clubbers.
